Research on Health is not only a task of medicine. Due to psychological, social, and economic influences on and the manifold effects of health it is a prominent field of research in various disciplines. In this context, the major task of health sociology can be seen in analysing the societal influences on health and illness, and to investigate how a society deals with its sick members as well as the measures taken for maintaining or restoring health. After a brief overview on the development and institutionalisation of Germany’s medical sociology and health sociology respectively, four currently pivotal perspectives on health sociology are introduced. These fields, which are also representing the structure of the volume, are: “Social-structural and cultural influences on illness and health”, “Social action and health”, “Healthcare system and health policy”, and “Health provision and it’s evaluation by the population”. For each of these areas of research central theoretical arguments and empirical findings are presented.
