Gender disparities in STEM (=science, technology, engineering, mathematics) scholastic achievement by ethnic origin: Evidence from Germany

ECSR Annual Conference, Amsterdam, 06. bis 08. Juli 2022

The objective of our study is to describe gender-ethnic gaps in math performance in Germany. We focus on two measures of achievement: standardized tests and teacher assessments and two educational stages (fourth and ninth grade). We use nationally representative data. We ask: Do we observe gender differences in math performance? Does this gender gap vary by ethnic origin? Preliminary results suggest gender and migration-specific differences regarding math tests scores. Regarding teacher assessments, no gender differences are found in fourth grades, but girls receive better grades in ninth grade at comparable levels of overall performance. Some evidence for ethnic variation in gender math achievement gaps.
