Description:

Are contemporary citizens becoming more critical? The argument of this paper is that citizens are becoming more critical, i.e., the level of political trust is becoming more and more dependent on the economic and political performance of the democratic systems. This process is especially conspicuous in European democracies and more concretely in traditional old democracies.  This paper is based on the analysis of a large TSCS panel data set including 497 cases from Europe and Latin America with data starting from 2000. This is the first cross-regional longitudinal analysis on political trust using more sophisticated RE multilevel models.
