Prime ministers (PMs) are at the core of politics in parliamentary democracies. They head governments, have a major influence on policymaking, and are central actors in election campaigns. However, despite PMs’ singular significance in parliamentary democracies, there is surprisingly little theory-driven, comparative research on them.
We believe that the future of studying PMs lies in combining various research agendas in Comparative Politics, reflecting the various arenas in which PMs compete (their parties, their governing coalitions, parliament, the media, election campaigns, the EU, and other international organisations). Therefore, we seek to bring together a diverse group of scholars from different backgrounds and all levels of academic experience who work on the various aspects of PM’s, their behaviour, and their impact. The workshop will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, encouraging the exploration of innovative methodologies, empirical analyses, and theoretical advancements.
The workshop will take place from 5-7 February 2025 at the University of Mannheim. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered for all selected participants. The workshop is funded by the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES).
