Guest at the MZES: Professor Scott Matthews, Ph.D.

J. Scott Matthews specializes in the study of elections, voting and public opinion in established democracies, focusing on the politics of Canada and the United States as well as on comparative political behaviour. He is broadly interested in the psychology of political learning and attitude change. While working at the MZES, he will study priming effects during election campaigns. Matthews obtained a Ph.D. in political science at the University of British Columbia. Prior to arriving at Memorial, he was an assistant professor at Queen's University (Kingston, ON, Canada), where he was tenured and promoted to associate professor. During the 2016-17 academic year, Matthews held the Fulbright Visiting Research Chair at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN, USA). He was a collaborator on the Canadian Election Study (2009-2015) and Director of the Canadian Opinion Research Archive (2011-2016). Matthews’ research has been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and was published, among other places, in the American Journal of Political Science, the British Journal of Political Science, and the Journal of Politics.

J. Scott Matthews is associate professor of political science at Memorial University (St. John’s, NL, Canada) and Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the MZES in research department B. His office is located in room A 211 (extension: 2879).
