In favour of tolerance and against extremism

The Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) fully endorses the University of Mannheim's statement "Standing up for Democracy and the Rule of Law".

As an interdisciplinary social research institute, we are proud to welcome researchers, employees, and guests from all over the world to conduct joint research on important issues. Diversity and variety in origin, sexual orientation, religion, and worldview are enriching and important for us as a research institute to be able to contribute to overcoming the social and political challenges of today and tomorrow.

We strongly and urgently emphasise how fundamentally important it is for us as a research institute and for our entire society to protect and defend liberal democracy and its fundamental values. The Basic Law (German: Grundgesetz) is committed to protecting inalienable human rights and the dignity of all people. We are appalled by efforts to undermine this foundation. We condemn all forms of discrimination, intolerance, racism, and extremism.

At the MZES, we will continue to work to ensure that the values enshrined in our Basic Law are protected and practised so that we can continue, as a diverse community, to contribute to solving important social science issues together.
