In 1999 the European Consortium for Sociological Research was organising two separate events at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research, both focusing on specific topics from the agenda of comparative social research:
A Graduate Summer School for doctoral students working in various fields of sociological research.The programme comprises five days of teaching
and ECSR Workshops comprising five parallel working groups. Each working group meet for two days.

ECSR

The European Consortium for Sociological Research (ECSR) is an association of leading sociological institutes in Europe, aiming to intensify exchange and co-operation among social scientists through joint conferences, workshops and research networks. The ECSR was founded in 1991 and now comprises 32 member institutions. It publishes the European Sociological Review.

MZES

The Mannheimer Zentrum für Europäische Sozialforschung MZES (Centre for European Social Research) was founded in 1989 as an institute of the Mannheim University devoted to comparative sociological and political science research on Europe.
In its two research departments about 50 researchers and a number of international guest researchers are working on various problems of the social and political development of European Societies and European Integration.
MZES enjoys a well-developed infrastructure consisting of a library, research archive (EURODATA) and a computer department.
