Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject: Mannheim Once Again Number 1 in the Economic and Social Sciences in Germany

In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking 2021, the University of Mannheim has recently been ranked number 140, a fantastic result which shows that the University of Mannheim is among the top ten percent of the best universities in the world. In the THE rankings by subject which were published today, the university has confirmed its top position in Germany and Europe. Once again, the University of Mannheim has been ranked the best German university in the economic and social sciences. In worldwide comparison, the University of Mannheim ranks 38th in social sciences subjects and 39th in business and economics subjects, thus improving by two ranks. In Europe, the university ranks 11th in its core research areas. Compared to last year, the University of Mannheim climbed 40 places in the psychology ranking and is now number 60. This makes the University of Mannheim the third-best university in Germany. Globally, the University of Mannheim is competing with institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford and Harvard.

“I am very happy that we were able to reconfirm and improve our top position among German universities in the ranking by subject”, says Prof. Thomas Puhl, President of the University of Mannheim. “The ranking shows that our strategy to focus on excellent research and teaching is successful and internationally renowned. I see the improved psychology ranking as a reward for the hard work of our colleagues in the department, no matter if they work in research or are continuously improving the programs available.”

The THE World University Ranking is the only ranking to assess research-intensive universities in their core activities: teaching, research and research influence, knowledge transfer, and internationalization. The latest ranking looked at 1,500 higher education institutions worldwide, including 48 German institutions. The ranking is based on the results of reputation surveys, the analysis of bibliometric databases and statistical key figures provided by the higher education institutions. It has long been considered one of the most recognizable rankings in the global higher education sector.
