European Research Network: Economic Change, Unequal Life Chances and Quality of Life (CHANGEQUAL)
Research question/goal:
Within the 5th EU Framework Programme, the MZES is participating in a network of leading European social science research institutes that aims at enhancing co-operation in comparative and interdisciplinary research relating to quality of life in the European Union and Candidate Countries. The network includes the following participating institutes (and local co-ordinators):

- MZES Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (Walter Müller)
- Nuffield Nuffield College, Oxford (Duncan Gallie)
- SOFI Swedish Institute for Social Research, Stockholm (Jan O. Jonsson)
Associated institutes are:
- Department of Sociology, Biccoca University, Milano (Antonio Schizzerotto)
- Institute of International and Social Studies, University of Tartu (Mikk Titma)
- AIAS Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies, Amsterdam (Jelle Visser) Teams from each of the participating institutes and affiliated researchers – ideally including economists, political scientists and sociologists – cooperate in the following five research areas:
- The nature and consequences of changing work patterns (Co-ordinator: Duncan Gallie)
- Income inequality, poverty and life-style deprivation (Co-ordinator: Brian Nolan)
- Intergenerational inheritance of inequalities between individuals and socio-economic groups (Co-ordinator: Walter Müller)
