Love of (Host-)Country? Nationalism and Patriotism from the Perspective of Germans with a Migrant Background

Research question/goal:
This project examines patriotic and nationalistic attitudes towards Germany among individuals with a migrant background in Germany, who account for 29.7% of the population. The focus lies on the three largest migrant groups: individuals of Turkish, Polish, and former Soviet Union origin. To date, these groups have not been systematically analysed with regard to host-country patriotism and nationalism.
Considering the recent resurgence of anti-Semitism in Germany and beyond, the project further investigates the influence of nationalism and patriotism on anti-Semitic attitudes. In so doing, it analyses these groups’ nationalistic and patriotic attitudes not only towards Germany, but also towards their respective countries of origin, i.e., Turkey, Poland, and the countries of the former Soviet Union. Moreover, the perspectives of Germans without a migrant background are included, allowing for comparisons both across the three migrant groups and between individuals with and without a migrant background.
The central contribution of the project lies in synthesising two strands of research that have hitherto largely been pursued in isolation: empirical migration research and political psychology research on the distinction between nationalism and patriotism. Overall, the project contributes to the analysis of contemporary social challenges by exploring in depth what role different attitudes, i.e., nationalism and patriotism, play in fostering the seemingly waning social cohesion in an increasingly multicultural society.
