Social Capital and (Chain) Migration
Research question/goal:
This project examines the hypothesis that social capital influences migration decisions and causes chain migration effects. A theoretical model of chain migration is provided. The empirical analysis concentrates on the case of the Italian immigrants living in Germany and the role of social networks in their immigration and return migration decisions. Three kinds of data sets are analyzed: selected national statistics, the Italian Migrant Sample in the German Socio-Economic-Panel (GSOEP) and a qualitative small town study.
