Welcome to the MZES Intranet!
Current Visiting Researcher
- Kirill Chmel is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at Columbia University in New York. His research broadly focusses on the political economy of media, identity politics, nation-building, and the preservation of minority cultures. In his work, Kirill combines formal modelling with causal inference strategies, using both observational and experimental data to explore testable implications derived from theoretical models. He also leverages recent advancements in machine learning to study how media influence attitudes and political behaviour worldwide.
Kirill is visiting the MZES from 5 to 30 May 2025. He can be reached by email kc3580@columbia.edu or in his office (room A212).
- Younghyun Lee is a Ph.D. candidate in political science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in the United States. Her research examines how intergroup dynamics influence the political behaviour and incorporation of immigrants in Europe, situating her work at the intersection of comparative political behaviour, political psychology, and identity politics. Her dissertation investigates the political integration of first-generation immigrants in Belgium and Germany, emphasising the role of interpersonal contact with natives within varying contexts of societal hostility. During her stay in Mannheim, she will conduct in-depth interviews with recent immigrants and refugees from Syria and Turkey to better understand how everyday interactions influence political attitudes in the host societies.
Younghyun is visiting the MZES from 5 to 30 May 2025. She can be reached by email yl78@illinois.edu or in her office (room A241).
- Stefano Sangiovanni is a PhD candidate in political studies at the University of Milan. His research focusses on how political parties balance positional and valence-based strategies to shape voter perceptions and structure political competition. His current projects explore how parties use valence strategically in different contexts, such as electoral campaigns and parliamentary debates, and how voters react, especially when faced with valence shocks such as political scandals. Methodologically, he combines quantitative and computational approaches, including text analysis, survey experiments, and applications of large language models in political science research.
Stefano is visiting the MZES from 4 to 30 May 2025. He can be reached by email stefano.sangiovanni@unimi.it or in his office (room A207).
- Mafalda Patacão Zúquete is a PhD candidate at the School of Politics and International Relations (SPIRe) at University College Dublin (UCD). Her work focusses on political communication in campaigns, in particular televised debates. She holds a BSc in Applied Mathematics and a MSc in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, granting her expertise in computational methods.
Mafalda Patacão Zúquete will be visiting the MZES from 1 to 31 May 2025. She can be reached by email Mafalda.patacaozuquete@ucdconnect.ie or in her office (room A206).
- Gaia Celebrin is a PhD candidate in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research at the University of Milan. Her research focusses on migration studies, economic sociology, and social stratification. Her current project examines the labour market integration of first- and second-generation migrants across European countries. She is interested in how individual-level and contextual factors shape ethnic penalty. From a methodological perspective, her work relies on quantitative methodology, including multilevel modelling and longitudinal analysis.
Gaia Celebrin will be visiting the MZES from 28 April to 25 May 2025. She can be reached by email gaia.celebrin@unimi.it or in her office (room A207).
