New scientific staff member: Irem Karacay
Since March 2021, Irem Karacay has been working as a researcher at the MZES in research area A in project A2.2009 Pioneering Policies and Practices Tackling Educational Inequalities in Europe (PIONEERED) (director: Prof. Irena Kogan).
Irem Karacay is a Ph.D. student in sociology at the CDSS of the University of Mannheim. Her dissertation addresses the intergenerational language transmission in linguistic minorities within immigrant groups, with a particular focus on Arabic- and Kurdish-speaking immigrants from Turkey in Germany. She holds a master’s degree in social sciences from Carlos III University of Madrid - Juan March Institute of Social Sciences. Her master’s thesis aimed at explaining the different educational performances among children of immigrants in the United States by drawing on the recent research in neurolinguistics. During her studies in Madrid, she worked as a research assistant at the D-Lab (Discrimination and Inequality Lab) of the Carlos III University of Madrid. Here, she participated in a field experiment focusing on phenotype-based discrimination in the labour market. Her academic interests include social stratification, immigration, ethnic discrimination, sociology of language, and sociolinguistics. In addition, Irem is an attorney-at-law registered to Istanbul Bar Association.
