Guest at the MZES: Dr. Sandra León Alfonso

Sandra León is Lecturer in Politics at the University of York and will be a visiting researcher at the MZES until the end of June 2017.

Sandra León is Lecturer in Politics at the University of York (United Kingdom). She graduated from Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) with a BA in Politics before going on to complete an MA in Social Sciences at the Juan March Institute (Madrid, 2002). Funded by La Caixa Foundation, between 2003 and 2005 she visited the Department of Government at Harvard University (MA, USA) as a PhD student. In June 2006, she defended her Ph.D. thesis on The Political Economy of Fiscal Decentralization at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Her dissertation won two prizes. Between 2006 and 2012, Sandra worked as a researcher in different Spanish institutions and visited the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University. During that period, she taught various aspects of Comparative Government, ranging from an introduction to politics and political democratic theory to advanced courses on political institutions, both at George Washington University (Madrid Study Centre) and at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2011-2012). In March 2013, she joined the Politics Department at the University of York.

Her research interests are in the area of federalism, comparative institutions, distributive politics, intergovernmental relations, party system nationalisation and economic voting. Her works have been published in journals such as the British Journal of Political Science, European Journal of Political Research, Electoral Studies and Party Politics. Since 2016, Sandra is political analyst in the opinion section of the newspaper El País. All her op-eds can be found here.
